R P Singh – The Smiling Assassin

It’s very rare to see a bowler watch his ball going over the ropes with a smile on his face. But, RP Singh is one such bowler who greets a wicket and six with the same smiling expression on his face.

In the 32nd match of IPL-2 between Deccan Chargers and Mumbai Indians on Wednesday, Rohit Sharma led the Chargers to consolidate their position to the second place by grabbing an unlikely hat-trick, and R P Singh snatched the purple cap from the head of Punjab’s Y A Abdulla by taking the scalps of Mumbai’s explosive pair – Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya. With 15 wickets from nine outings so far, he has given only 191 runs so far, and is currently at the top of most wicket-takers list.

His 4 for 22 against Kolkata Knight Riders in this season’s fourth match is his best figures in the IPL so far and second best in the Twenty20. He is the first bowler from Deccan Chargers to bag four wickets in an IPL innings, eclipsing Shahid Afridi's 3 for 28 against Rajasthan at Hyderabad on April 24, 2008.

RP's impressive run in the IPL this season has earned him a place in the Indian squad for the ICC World Twenty20, scheduled to be played in England next month. It was in October 2007 that RP last played a Twenty20 match for India. Though R P has done plenty in the IPL-2 so far with his bounce and accurate bowling, his last two wickets (of Sachin and Jayasuriya) were the most impressive.
