Nine Defining Moments of IPL-2

A brief look at the nine defining moments of IPL-2 that will go into the League's golden book of history.

The conclusion of IPL’s second season is just a match away and that too the final battle between the two best teams that sweated out their way to reach the finals leaving behind the remaining six teams. Just like the inaugural season, this time too IPL stayed in the news for good and bad reasons. Last season it was the cheerleaders, this time it was security, fake IPL player and then the strategic timeout. These were all off-field activities, but here we’ll look back at those top-9 on-field moments that will go into the IPL’s golden book of history.

1. AB deVilliers Superbly-Paced Century: With an unbeaten knock of 105 off 54 balls, AB deVilliers led Delhi Daredevils to victory over Chennai Super Kings in the tournament’s first close game. His century came at a time when Delhi’s innings started disastrously and ended with high score of 189. The century of deVilliers included six 6s and five 4s.It was a power-packed innings, highlighted by de Villiers' stunning assault in the last four overs. Nothing matched the 20 he smashed in four successive balls off Andrew Flintoff.

2. Yusuf-Kamran's Super Over Performance: Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders entered into IPL’s first tie which was broken by Yusuf Pathan and Kamran Khan with their clean hitting and sensible bowling. Yusuf plundered 18 runs from the first four balls of the Super Over to give the defending champions their first win of the season.

On the other hand it was the 18-year-old rookie fast bowler Kamran Khan who with a tight final over forced a tie before being entrusted by skipper Shane Warne to bowl the Super Over. Kamran gave six runs off the last over (of the scheduled 20) and did well to hold his nerves in the Super Over too and gave away 15 runs.

3. Tendulkar-Jayasuriya Overwhelm Kolkata: It was a treat for the fans of this great game when they witnessed the two masters of the limited-overs game raise a century stand in 52 balls. Sachin scored 68 and Sanath followed suit with an explosive 52 to form the crux of Mumbai Indians’ 187 score against Kolkata Knight Riders. The veteran pair, with a combined age of nearly 76, treated Port Elizabeth to the cleanest, purest exhibition of batting that this season of IPL had seen.
Tendulkar-Jayasuriya
Sachin batted with amazing fluency. He got the wrists into play superbly, pulling and cutting hard, and used his crease to negotiate the pacers. There were no crude shots, no cross-batted slogs from the duo. This was clinical hitting - each veteran knew the field and backed himself to pick the gaps. It was the experience of 1138 combined international games coming together in a mesmerizing mosaic of boundaries.

4. Raina Misses Century: In the 22nd match of this season between Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, Suresh Raina hammered a low full-toss from Munaf Patel through extra cover and punched the air in delight. He looked thrilled thinking that he had just become the first Indian to score a hundred in the IPL (the previous seven had been made by four Australians, a New Zealander, a Sri Lankan and, a week before in Durban, a South African). But, it went horribly wrong when Raina skied the next ball to deep backward point, where Graeme Smith judged the catch nicely.
Suresh Raina
Raina’s smiling face turned gloomy when he came to know that a mistake by the scorers had gifted him two extra runs somewhere along the line. Suspicion centred on the 19th over, which, according to the scoreboard, Raina finished on 95 rather than 93. Somehow, he had pinched two of his partner MS Dhoni's runs. The conclusion was grim: Raina had made 98 and the happy-go-lucky swipe that cost him his wicket had also, it now transpired, cost him a hundred.

5. Yuvraj’s Double Hat-Trick: Though Yuvraj Singh failed to take his team Kings XI Punjab to the semis, but the world's best pie-chucker picked up two hat-tricks this season. He bowled better than he batted in the tournament. He has proved that he can be one of the most irritating bowlers to face. He can turn the ball slightly but what he does do cleverly is vary his pace by using a scrambled seam. He is usually slow, slower and not so slow but can surprise the batsmen with his quick ones.
Yuvraj Singh
His first hat-trick (3 for 22) came in the 24th match of this season against Bangalore Royal Challengers and the second one (4 for 13) came in the 49th match against Deccan Chargers in the form of Herschelle Gibbs, Andrew Symonds and Venugopal Rao’s wickets. It was the Punjab skipper’s tremendous bowling effort that made them emerge victorious in both the matches. Read More...

Glitz, Glamour and Bullring

And if the speculations of media don’t go wrong then the crowd might enjoy the premier show of an upcoming bollywood movie on that night. Reports indicate that producer Sajid Nadiadwala will be here with bollywood stars Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor to unveil his film. Though it would not be a new experience for Akshay to be associated with IPL as he was the brand ambassador of Delhi Daredevils in the inaugural season of IPL, but for Kareena it would be completely a new experience. She is supposed to perform a special dance number from the movie. Read More...

Sreesanth – the Crybaby Cricketer

Kings XI Punjab’s pacer Sreesanth would have been quite a relieved person when the 42nd match of IPL-2 came to a ‘peaceful’ ending at the SuperSport Park, Centurion on Tuesday.

Though he bowled just an over against the Mumbai Indians on that day, it came wrapped in gift paper for the opponents as they saw 21 runs being added to their scorecard by the end of this over.

It seems that Sreesanth’s ear still echoes with the sound of Harbhajan’s slap which came on his cheek a year ago during the inaugural season of IPL in India. But, this time it was Dwyane Bravo who gave him a good bashing at Centurion.
Sreesanth exchanging words with Hayden
Only 14 runs had come off the first four overs for Mumbai when Sreesanth came into the attack, and Bravo duly seized the opportunity, pulling him for four, straight-driving and flicking him over long-on for two glorious sixes, and then through midwicket for another four as the over leaked 21 runs with ease.

Sreesanth might have thanked his Gods as this blow from the West Indian was nothing in front of what he suffered a year ago. Punjab’s skipper Yuvraj displayed his captaincy skills in understanding the mental state of Sreesanth and did not ask him to aggravate his ‘pain’ by bowling another over.

It seems Sreesanth’s life is not full of roses as a thorn from a rose that he offered to a girl in reel life while shooting for an advertisement has pricked him so deep that he saw undated phone calls coming from his parents and friends in Bangalore a week before. The reason of their concern was a newspaper report in which struggling actress and model Daisy Bopanna claimed that Sree and she were ‘more than just good friends’.

Daisy claimed that in the ad Sreesanth proposed to her with a rose and even after the shoot was over Sree would keep SMSing her, telling her that he was still waiting for an answer. Read More...

Kimberley Resonates with Symonds Knock

After averting the threat of slipping into the danger zone by way of their win against Mumbai Indians on Wednesday, Deccan Chargers are in an upbeat mood.

Their joy has doubled with the returning of Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds from national duty to keep their winning momentum going.

In his first match of IPL-2 at Kimberley against Kings XI Punjab on Saturday, he proved his mettle with an unbeaten knock of 60 that included four huge 6s and two 4s, but couldn’t see his team catapult to the second place in points table. Punjab won the match with 3 wickets, and moved to fifth place sharing points with Deccan, who are one place above. Symonds won the "DLF Maximum Number of Sixes" award, while Mahela Jayawardene was declared "Man of the Match". Read More...

The Pom-Pom Girls of IPL-2

Get ready to see some plunging necklines and rising hemlines when a bunch of “naughty” and “hottie” cheerleaders root from the sidelines to cheer their respective teams during the second season of Indian Premier League (IPL-2) that kicks-off on April 18.

The inaugural season of this multi-million bonanza of cricket saw protests from conservatives in India against the show of bare skin by scantily clad cheerleaders. But, amid the Table Moutains of Cape and wild breezes of Durban, you will see no more pants, but pure and bare short skirt stuff.
Royal Challengers Cheergirls
Do you know who has replaced Washington Redskins in IPL2? Before you cheer for these cheerleaders, let’s have a sneak preview of these beauties who are going to give you adrenaline rushes which might be accompanied by doses of testosterone too.

The Chosen Angels for Knight Riders
A reality show named ‘Knights and Angels’ was organized by superstar Shahrukh Khan to select a fresh group of cheerleaders for his team Kolkata Knight Riders. After an extensive audition that was conducted across key metros in India, King Khan and the ‘Bengal Tiger’ Sourav Ganguly, who was than the assumed captain of KKR, picked up six angels from a group of 24 young girls to support the Knight Riders. The six Angels are specially trained in flirty acrobatic skills for a scintillating on-field performance by bollywood choreographer Shiamak Davar. The Angels were picked not only on the basis of their beauty and dancing skills, but their energy level, style, poise, personality, attitude, grace, rhythm, and fire were the other factors that secured their position in the final six.

The White Mischief Gals
The Bangalore Royal Challengers now have a brand new team of 24 members to cheer them up in South Africa. The suave and stylish liquor baron Vijay Mallya, who owns the Royal Challengers, has hired the US-based Varsity cheerleader group (renamed as the White Mischief Gals after the Mallya-owned UB Group’s ‘White Mischief’ brand of vodka) to support his team players in the second season of IPL. Wearing white skirts and white tops with red and blue stripes, the White Mischief Gals will travel across South Africa for all Royal Challenger matches during the five-week tournament, offering fans "flirtatious messages and tips", says a company-released statement. Last year the Washington Redskins were there to support the Royal Challengers in India, but they failed to inspire the team as the team performed poorly and finished seventh out of eighth teams. Hope this change in cheerleaders brings in a change in the bad fortunes of the team too.

The Royals Diva
Rajasthan Royals, already has the oomph factor Shilpa Shetty. To further enhance the x-factor, the Royals organized a nationwide contest to hunt the ‘face of Rajasthan Royals’ called the Royals Diva. Targeted at girls in the age group of 18-22 years, two girls – Jaya Anand (Jaipur) and Nehal Parikh (Mumbai) – were selected by Shilpa Shetty as winners. Judged on selection criteria that ranged from personality, vocational skills and overall appeal, these divas of Rajasthan Royals will lead the cheerleading squad of the team during its IPL-2 matches.Complete Article...

Mandira Size Zero Looks in IPL

Can Cricket be hot? Ah! it boils when Mandira Bedi just sits outside those forbiden ropes of cricket called boundaries, wearing denim micro-minis, deep-neck tops, unbuttoned shirts chatting cricket with wannabe TV anchor, superstars of Bollywood and occasionaly for a change with cricketing experts.

Plenty of cricketing action is currently going on in South Africa, where the second season of Indian Premier League is gaining momentum. Surprisingly it’s not just the on-field action that’s being the subject of discussions among the IPL fans. Mandira Bedi’s new look too is causing a lot of buzz amongst the crowd.
Mandira Bedi's new look for IPL-2
Her new look is totally different from what we have seen earlier. She is this new 'size zero avatar 'of Indian televison who has shed those 'extraaa' inning saris to western tops, trousers and denim micro-minis.
The long hair and slightly plump frame has given way to a leaner and sexier look. Wearing a short hair-do and fresh look, she was clearly in her spirits in Cape Town leading up to the opening game between the Mumbai Indians and the Chennai Super Kings.
Mandira Bedi's sexy looks
It’s not for the first time that she has surprised her fans with something new. In the 2003 Cricket World Cup, she gave cricket a whole new dimension and created quite a stir when she first hosted ‘Extraaa Innings’ wearing stylish saris and noodle strap blouses exposing her ample cleavage and bosom to woo the audience. The spectators were eagerly waiting to see her in a new avatar as she had already given a hint to this change in an interview prior to coming at South Africa saying, “I will not wear saris because T-20 has a young feel.”

Another difference from last year is that instead of sitting in the studio she is presenting the show from the grounds, giving the audiences live commentary, interviewing players during the lunch, tea and strategy breaks. Read More...

R P Singh – The Smiling Assassin

It’s very rare to see a bowler watch his ball going over the ropes with a smile on his face. But, RP Singh is one such bowler who greets a wicket and six with the same smiling expression on his face.

In the 32nd match of IPL-2 between Deccan Chargers and Mumbai Indians on Wednesday, Rohit Sharma led the Chargers to consolidate their position to the second place by grabbing an unlikely hat-trick, and R P Singh snatched the purple cap from the head of Punjab’s Y A Abdulla by taking the scalps of Mumbai’s explosive pair – Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya. With 15 wickets from nine outings so far, he has given only 191 runs so far, and is currently at the top of most wicket-takers list.
RP Singh celebrates with teammates
His 4 for 22 against Kolkata Knight Riders in this season’s fourth match is his best figures in the IPL so far and second best in the Twenty20. He is the first bowler from Deccan Chargers to bag four wickets in an IPL innings, eclipsing Shahid Afridi's 3 for 28 against Rajasthan at Hyderabad on April 24, 2008.
R P Singh celebrates
RP's impressive run in the IPL this season has earned him a place in the Indian squad for the ICC World Twenty20, scheduled to be played in England next month. It was in October 2007 that RP last played a Twenty20 match for India. Though R P has done plenty in the IPL-2 so far with his bounce and accurate bowling, his last two wickets (of Sachin and Jayasuriya) were the most impressive. In his first over against Mumbai on Wednesday, he sent back the two stalwarts... Read Complete Article...
